Recently, I participated in an inline skate (Rollerblade) marathon in Napa Valley. Marathon races are events I take part in from time to time not necessarily for a podium spot, but for the simple fun of it.  As for the Valley, I have to say, there are few more picturesque places on earth then a clear, warm Sunday mornng along the Silverado Trail.  I highly recommend it.

Anyway, during the race while often being disracted by the perfectly laid out vine rows and Mardi Gras-colored hot-air balloons just above the horizon, I was skating along and doing my best; looking ahead for the next competitor to catch (and hopefully pass).  Did I mention I wasn't in it for a podium spot?

I came up to a woman whom I gauged to be about my age and based on her attire, an aerodynamic skate suit, appeared to be a bit more skilled than myself.  Donning my official race emsemble of running shorts and a tank, I followed her a while then took turns in leading our newly-formed twosome.  I noticed she would be in her efficient tuck position for a number of strokes and then would straighten up while placing her hand on her lower back.  My first thought, being a Pilates instructor, was to ask her if her back was okay.  But before I could get the words out, she asked me, "Doesn't your back hurt"  I immediately replied "No..but I teach (and practice) Pilates.  I'm using my ab muscles (the Powerhouse to us Pilates afficionados) to support my torso."  "Ohhh," she exhaled, as if I had some sort of secret weapon.

So we went on to finish the race.  It was a very exhilarating morning.  And darn, no podium this time.  Did I mention I race for the fun of it?

After the last medals were handed out and we were all leaving to head for our cars, the woman skated by me a final time and said to herself (but making sure I heard her), "Note to self...Pilates" while giving me a thumbs up.

It was a great reminder of why I do Pilates.  I guess I take for granted the fact that I can skate marathon distances with no pain in my back.  Thinking back to my fellow skating competitor, I wish she lived in the Los Angeles area so I could show her exactly what I do to allow me to experience pain-free skating.  I wish I had gotten her number.  Maybe we will meet at next year's race.  Maybe on the podium.  Or better yet, maybe she will read this story and contact me (www.jospehpilates.com).  I'm always willing to share my secret weapon.
